What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
I have found that this is a luxury and also an art. I try to work within budgets. Generally, I charge by the hour but can also get quite a bit done in 30 minutes if that is all a person can afford. It will be a difficult 30 minutes but only because I am so result oriented. $65/hour is my usual fee, but I have many package deals that can bring it down to about $50. There is no gym fee because I have a gym at my home that is fairly well equipped.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
The first thing I do is evaluate them. I take their weight and their measurements. I ask many questions about health, medications, and family history. I discuss goals. I ask about exercise experience and tolerance for soreness. I try to put myself in their shoes and get to know them as quickly as possible so I can help them beginning with the first session.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been ACE certified since 1994. I take continuing education classes yearly. I read new information that comes out weekly. I have trained at least 500 people in the course of my 23 year personal training career. It is the only job I have and I do it full time.
How did you get started doing this type of work?
I love to exercise. It makes me high. I love the results. I love the feeling of being strong. I am inspired more and more as I get older when I realize the difference between people who do....and people who do not exercise. Read the studies. There is not one bad thing to be had from the effort of exercising.
What types of customers have you worked with?
Oh gosh....Too many to count. I have people in their 80's, one soon to be 90 in November. I have people who are 18 and full of energy. Housewives, high powered attorneys, record producers, actors, engineers and architects. I have people with back problems, knee problems, hip problems, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and type A's.
Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?
I find joy in so many things. I love to take photographs and get paid to do that professionally. I love to decorate. I love my animals as I have one cat and two dogs. I love to read and I love to travel. I have a marine who is just 23 and was just promoted to Lance Corporal, so he is one of my favorite projects, I also have a 17 year old football player who scores lots of touchdowns and that is a kick to watch.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
Make sure they are asking you questions about your health and family history. Make sure they know the types of medications you are on. Make sure they know your tolerance for pain and also that they start SLOWLY. Your joints must be trained first.
What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?
The main and most important things are having a clear picture in your mind about your goals, and then deciding to be consistent. A work out here and a work out there, will never get the results you desire. Diet is 70% of losing weight and gaining muscle. Be determined and make sure the person you hire asks questions about how this part of your life is going.
